Properties and Stability of p-Toluenesulfonic acid ( PTSA)
PTSA is stable under ambient conditions, avoiding contact with incompatible materials and fire, easily absorbing moisture and making cotton fabric, wood, paper dehydrated carbonized, insoluble in Benzene series solvent, such as Benzene, Toluene and Xylene.
p-Toluenesulfonic acid(PTSA)reacts with other materials. Such as melts, strong oxidants, strong alkalis, amines, Ammonium Nitrate, Chorine Trifluoride, permanganates, Sodium peroxide, Peroxide, Acetaldehyde, Acids(like chromic acid, hypochlorous acid, nitric acid, sulfuric acid), corrosives( like ammonia, Ammonium Hydroxide, Calcium Hydroxide, Potassium Hydroxide, Sodium Hydroxide), Chlorosulfonic acid, fuming sulfuric acid, Bromine Pentafluoride, Perchloric acid and Potassium tert-butanol.
p-Toluenesulfonic acid(PTSA)is a kind of catalyst commonly used in organic synthesis. Reacting with Sodium Hydroxide would yield Sodium P-Toluenesulphonate and then with Phosphorous pentachloride, P-toluenesulfonyl chloride could be obtained. The latter is used in nucleophilic substitution reaction and also serves as a protection group of alcoholic hydroxyl group.
