Toluene is colorless transparent liquid, with smell of Benzene and strong refraction. It could be soluble in Ethanol, Aether, Acetone, Chloroform, Carbon Bisulfite and Glacial Acetic Acid easily and in water slightly. Relative density: 0.886 g/cm3, freezing point: -95℃, boiling point: 110.6℃, refractive index:1.4967, flash point: 4.4℃。Toluene is flammable. The steam mixed with air could be blow up. With slight toxicity, the acute oral toxicity: 5000mg/kg. High concentration stream is narcotic and has irritation.
Toluene is an important solvent and a kind of additive for high octane gasoline,also an important raw material for organic chemical. Compared with obtained from coal and crude oil Benzene and Xylene, Toluene’s yield is overstock. Thus, some Toluene are used in Benzene and Xylene dealkylate or disproportionate to yield Xylene .Intermediates derived from Toluene are widely used in paints, medicine, pesticides,gunpowder, assistant, flavors and other fined chemicals production and some synthesis materials. Toluene could obtain Benzyl Chloride, Benzylidene chloride Benzotrichloride and their ramification Benzoate Acid. Benzoate Acid and Benzoyl chloride are widely used in medicine, pesticides, paintings, especially flavors compounding. Toluene’s central chlorinateds are intermediates of pesticide, medicine and paintings. When oxidized it yields benzoic acid, which is a kind of important food antiseptics and intermediates in organic chemistry. After sulfonated,Toluene and Benzene derivatives could output intermediates, such as P-Toluenesulfonic Acid and its Sodium salt, Toluene-2,4-disulphonic acid, Benzaldehyde disulfonic acid, Toluene sulfochloride and the like, used in detergent adhesives, fertilizer anti-caking adhesives, organic pigments , pharama and paintings production. All they play a great role in Polyurethane Products, paintings, organic dye, rubber assistants, medicines, explosive and others.
